1 Day Visa-free Shore Excursion to Moscow

St. Petersburg Shore Excursions

I suggest you consider a Moscow day trip to maximize your Russian experience. You can combine a Moscow shore excursion with the main highlights of St. Petersburg on your other day (or days) of stay. This will help you to cover the most famous sights of Russia and compare the two leading cities of our country (trust me, the are very different in architecture and spirit).

Transportation to Moscow from St. Petersburg

For a Moscow day trip there are 2 options, depending upon whether your cruise ship will dock in St. Petersburg 2 or 3 days.

Round Trip by High Speed Train Sapsan

It’s ideal to have a Moscow day trip from St. Petersburg on the second day of a 3-day stopover. In this case I suggest going to Moscow by a comfortable high speed train called Sapsan.

The main advantage of the train ride (besides comfort, of course) is that the train stations are located in the city centres, so you depart from St. Petersburg city centre and arrive in Moscow city centre.

This way you won’t waste time on driving outside the cities to/from the airports and can start your Moscow tour straight away.

Flight to Moscow and High Speed Train to St. Petersburg

It’s a pity the return train ride is not always an option. Thus, if your cruise docks in Russia but 2 days, your Moscow shore excursion will only be possible on the first (arrival) day. The cruise ship arrival time doesn’t allow you to catch a train. In this case I suggest flying to Moscow and taking a train back to St. Petersburg in the evening. It will be the most efficient combination.

Moscow Shore Excursion Itinerary

Disembark. Go through the passport control. Meet your guide and driver in the port terminal. If it is a 2-day cruise and you travel to Moscow on your first day, then 7:00 is the arrival time and you need to disembark within half an hour after that in order to catch your plane to Moscow.

If you are on a 3-day stopover in St. Petresburg and your trip to Moscow falls on Day 2, then you’ll need to disembark at around 5:30 to catch the earliest train and maximize your time in Moscow.

Your guide and car will transfer you to the airport or train station and help you with check in.

In Moscow your local guide will pick you up at the airport (arrivals area) or at the train statin (right on the platform, at your train car).

Transfer to the Red Square and Kremlin.

You will have a walking tour of the Red Square and see such famous sights as GUM department store, Lenin’s tomb, St. Basil’s Cathedral, State History Museum.

Optional: inside visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral.

You’ll also walk through the Alexander Garden, see the eternal flame on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. If time permits, you’ll watch change of the guards.

Kremlin tour is a must for your Moscow shore excursion. Here you will see Russia’s biggest bell, a.k.a. the Tsar Bell and Russia’s biggest cannon a.k.a. the Tsar Cannon, Ivan the Great Bell Tower, and will visit two Kremlin cathedrals – Annunciation and Assumption.

Optional: You can add a tour of the Armoury to the program. Another interesting visit is the Diamond Fund, also located on the grounds of the Kremlin.

After the Kremlin tour you’ll have time for lunch/snack/coffee-break and have Moscow sightseeing tour by car. The sightseeing tour will cover such famous landmarks of our capital as Church of Christ the Saviour (with a visit), Tverskaya Street, Moscow University, Boulevard Ring, Lubyanka Square, Bolshoy Theatre and Theatre Square, Arbat street, Manezhnaya Square, Gorky Park, Moskva River, Moscow-City business quarter and Sparrow Hills Viewing platform offering unforgettable panoramic views.

Optional: You can consider to add a spectacular a cable car ride across the Moskva River from Luzhniki Stadium to Sparrow Hills or vica versa.

Metro (=subway) ride taking you to the most beautiful Moscow metro stations will add to your impressions of Russia’s capital.

Of course, Moscow day trip is not enough to see all sights and museums, but it will definitely give you a taste of Russia’s capital city. You’ll feel the spirit of Moscow and know what there’s to see. I’m sure you’ll return again to see more of this amazing vibrant city and maybe travel to Golden Ring towns surrounding Moscow.
